Mecone are leading the project and have commissioned Astrolabe Group to assist in engaging with local community stakeholders. The proposal will provide critical data and digital infrastructure that supports the security, social and economic well-being of Australia.
The site is located within the Marsden Park Industrial precinct and is mostly undeveloped, containing scattered trees and cleared grassland. The precinct aims to create attractive employment opportunities for residents in Sydney's North West, and includes a retail hub to service new residential estates in the area. The data centre itself will generate hundreds of local job opportunities throughout construction and ongoing operations.
The Baitul Huda Mosque is located to the east of the site and nearby residential properties in Hassall Grove to the south. Vegetation buffers will be used on the south of the site to reduce the environmental impacts to residents in Hassall Grove.
Demand for data centres is increasing as people and businesses become more reliant on storing and managing information on the ‘cloud.’ Data centres are integral to the functioning of Australia, enabling the operation of hospitals, roads, universities, and allowing the daily operations of government, businesses and people to make decisions and plan for the future.
The proposed development will enhance digital capabilities of the area and allow Sydney to keep up with the demand for additional data storage.
The proposed development involves the construction of six data centre buildings. Each building would be 4 storeys, containing 24 data halls, 40 generators and ancillary office space.
Construction activities include minor earthworks and construction of the data centre buildings. Other features include the associated hardstand, circulation areas, security fencing and landscaping.
Construction is expected to commence early 2025.
An Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is currently being prepared that will respond to requirements of the Secretary’s Environmental Assessment Requirements (SEARs) issued by Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure. The SEARs specifies the issues that are required to be addressed in the EIS.
Further information about progress of the proposal can be found at the Major Projects website.
